DEFINITION OF A CHEMICAL:
A chemical is a distinct compound or substance especially which has been artificially prepared or purified.
A chemical is any basic substance that is used in or produced by a reaction involving changes to atoms or molecules.
CLASSES OF CHEMICALS.
Chemicals can be divided into two classes;
- Chemicals based on use.
- Chemicals based on hazardous nature.
Chemicals based on use include the following;
- Pharmaceuticals.
- Cosmetics.
- Nuclear.
- Agro chemicals.
- Industrial chemicals.
- Laboratory chemicals.
Chemicals based on hazardous nature;
- Highly hazardous and toxic chemicals.
- Moderately hazardous and toxic chemicals.
- Non- hazardous and toxic chemicals.
EXAMPLES OF HAZARDOUS AND TOXIC CHEMICALS:
- Ammonia
- Bleach
- Over cleaner( sodium hydroxide)
- Toilet bowl cleaners (hydrochloric acid).
- Car wash and polish
- Lice shampoo
- Flea powders
- Pesticides
- Tar and bug remover
- Sodium or calcium hypocrite.
- Triclosan
- Formaldehyde
- Phenol
- Nitrobenzene
- Trichloroethane
- Perchloethylene
- Sulphric acid
- Cytotoxic agents
