DISEASES
Diseases simply refer to the illness or disorder of the body or mind.
The agent causing diseases are called pathogens. The science and the study of disease is called PATHOLOGY
Diseases causative agents are the following;
- Viruses
- Bacteria
- Worms
- Protozoa
- Fungi
- Spirochetes
- Rickettsia
What are vectors?
Vectors are animals which transmit disease causing organisms (pathogens) from an infected person to an uninfected person without being infected. Examples are: mosquito, rat, house fly etc.
Type of vectors
There are two type of vector s these are :
- Biological vector
- Mechanical vector
Diseases can be grouped into two:-
(A) COMMUNICABLE DISEASES;- are the diseases that can be transmitted from one person to another. Mode of transmission can be through direct contact, infected air or vectors. Communicable diseases are also refers to infectious diseases
Types of disease and modes of transfer/ communicable diseases are the following
- Air-borne disease
- Food/Water-borne disease
- Contagious skin disease
- Animal/ insect bites disease
- Sexually – transmitted disease
WAYS OF ENTRY INTO THE BODY
- Through the mouth or nose
- Through the intestine
- Through the skin
Examples of common communicable diseases are the following
- -Cough
- -Tuberculosis
- -Flu
- -Malaria fever
- -Typhoid fever
- -Dysentery
- -Measles
- -Cold
- -Gonorrhea
- -Ringworm
- -Scabies
- -Sleeping sickness
- -Hiv/Aids
- -Syphills
- -Small pox
- -Cholera
- -Ringworm
- -Influenza etc
GENERAL PREVENTION OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
- Wash the hands properly before eating and after using the toilet
- Ensure quarantine regulation
- Maintain personal cleanliness,
- Ensure good environmental sanitation in and around the house.
- Cook your foods well before you eat them
- Keep your fingers clean and cut short finger nails.
- Treat wounds and sores and never leave them exposed
- Fumigate your surroundings regularly
- Regular medical checkup is very important
(B) Non-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES:- are diseases that cannot be transmitted from one person to another. They have many causes but are never caused by germs, bacteria or other living organisms that attack the body.
They are rather caused by;
- Atomic fallouts
- Chemical fallout
- Physiological failures of the tissues
- Brain damage
- Dietary imbalance
- Malnutrition
- Heredity

- -Stroke
- -Cataract
- -Cancer
- -Snake-bite

PREVENTION OF NON COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
- By engaging in physical exercise
- Eat balanced diet
- Do not live in a dusty environment
- Live a healthy life-style
- Do not be driven into stress
- Maintain personal cleanliness
- Have regular medical check-up
- Avoid sedentary or careless life-style
- Avoid over-working self. Etc
EVALUATION
- Differentiate between communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases
