The machine designed for the purpose of producing character on a paper is called TYPEWRITER.<br \/>\nTypewriter is a machine which enables the user to produce printed words i.e. it is an office machine designed for typing.<br \/>\nTypewriter was invented in 1864 by MulterHolter in Australia. Examples of typewriters are Alder, Olympia, Oliveth, IBM, Imperia, RankZerex etc.<br \/>\nThere are basically two types of typewriter:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div>Manual typewriter: is operated manually by using human effort\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Electric typewriter: is electrically operated with electricity.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Typewriter has two typefaces namely piece and elite.<br \/>\n<strong>IMPORTANCE OF KEYBOARDING<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div>It saves time\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>It makes document neat and legible\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>It serves as a means of earning a living\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>It ensures accuracy in figures, words or character produced.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>USES OF TYPEWRITER<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div>It is used for typing business document, memo, legal work etc.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>It is used for typing personal document \u2013 letter.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>It can be used for creating decorations\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>It is used to produce many of the document with the use of carbon paper\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A person who uses typewriter to type is called a TYPIST.<br \/>\n<strong>PARTS OF A TYPEWRITER AND THEIR USES<br \/>\n<\/strong>1. <strong>CARRIAGE<\/strong>: Is the moving part of the machine, it carries the paper from left to right.<br \/>\n2. <strong>CARRIAGE RELEASE LEVER<\/strong>: It allows the carriage to move freely to the left and right.<br \/>\n3. <strong>PLATEN KNOBS<\/strong>: This is the knobs situated at each end of the platen. It is used for turning the paper into position.<br \/>\n4. <strong>CARRIAGE RETURN LEVER<\/strong>: Is used for turning up the right in order to begin a new line.<br \/>\n5. <strong>PAPER GUIDE<\/strong>: Is used in adjusting and guide against left hand edge of the paper when paper is inserted in the machine.<br \/>\n6. <strong>SHIFT KEY<\/strong>: When depressed, it enables the use of letters and other punctuation marks.<br \/>\n7. <strong>SHIFT LOCK<\/strong>: It enables continuous typing of capital letters.<br \/>\n8. <strong>PAPER RELEASE<\/strong>: It frees the paper in the machine when there is need to remove, adjust and insert paper into the machine.<br \/>\n9. <strong>MARGIN STOP<\/strong>: Is used to fix the point at which the link of typing begins on the left side and ends on the right side of the paper.<br \/>\n10. <strong>COLOUR CHANGE ADJUST<\/strong>: It changes the colour to be typed on the ribbon either red or black.<br \/>\n11. <strong>PLATEN<\/strong>: Is the rolter which the paper is held.<br \/>\n12. <strong>PAPER BAIL BAR<\/strong>: Is the movable arm marked with a typing scale on which paper grips are mounted for easy typing.<br \/>\n13. <strong>BACK SPACE KEY<\/strong>: It moves the carriage from left to right one space for re-type.<br \/>\n14. <strong>SPACE BAR<\/strong>: It allows space between words.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>GUIDES TO KEYBOARDING<br \/>\n<\/strong>All major parts of the body are involved when typing on the typewriter.
