farming or the cultivation of one piece of land for some years before the farmer leaves the piece of land to cultivate another in order to allow the former to regain lost nutrients.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Favourable Conditions Necessary for Bush Fallowing<br \/>\n<\/strong>(i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Abundance of large area of farmlands.<br \/>\n(ii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Low population in the area.<br \/>\n(iii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Low level of education of the farmers.<br \/>\n(iv)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Use of crude tools and implements.<br \/>\n(v)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Low level of technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Characteristics of Bush Fallowing<br \/>\n<\/strong>(i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Farming is purely subsistence i.e. for family consumption.<br \/>\n(ii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It involves the use of crude implements like cutlass and hoe.<br \/>\n(iii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It is very common in rural areas where land is in abundance.<br \/>\n(iv)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Food crops such as yam, cassava and maize are grown.<br \/>\n(v)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Family labour is employed.<br \/>\n(vi)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It is practiced where population is low.<br \/>\n(vii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Farmlands are left to fallow for 3-5 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Types of crops grown<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Food crops are mainly grown such as:<br \/>\n<\/strong>(a)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Root and tuber crops e.g yam, cassava and cocoyam.<br \/>\n(b)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Cereal (grain) crops e.g. rice, millet, maize etc.<br \/>\n(c)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Berry e.g. tomato<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Advantages of Bush Fallowing<br \/>\n<\/strong>(i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It brings about natural restoration of lost nutrients to the soil.<br \/>\n(ii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It helps to control plant diseases and pests.<br \/>\n(iii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It uses cheap family labour.<br \/>\n(iv)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It checks soil erosion, leaching and weed growth.<br \/>\n(v)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It is very easy to practice as low technology is required.<br \/>\n(vi)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A farmer gets different crops from the same land.<br \/>\n(vii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It involves low capital investment i.e. it is cheap to operate.<br \/>\n(viii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It provides Pasture for livestock animals.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Disadvantages of Bush Fallowing<br \/>\n<\/strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It leads to wastage of land.<br \/>\n2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It leads to land fragmentation due to increase in population.<br \/>\n3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It allows cultivation of only one seasonal crop like maize, rice, millet etc.<br \/>\n4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It does not give room for mechanization of farms.<br \/>\n5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It leads to soil erosion when soil is exhausted.<br \/>\n6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It destroys valuable forest resources like timber.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>EVALUATION
