\n<\/strong>GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)
\n<\/strong>A\u00a0geographic information system<\/strong>\u00a0(GIS<\/strong>) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data. <\/p>\n

\u00a0The\u00a0acronym\u00a0GIS is sometimes used for\u00a0Geographical Information Science<\/strong>\u00a0or Geospatial Information Studies<\/strong>\u00a0to refer to the academic discipline or career of working with geographic\u00a0information systems\u00a0and is a large domain within the broader academic discipline of\u00a0Geoinformatics.<\/p>\n

\u00a0In general, GIS describes any\u00a0information system\u00a0that integrates, stores, edits, analyzes, shares, and displays geographic\u00a0information.\u00a0GIS applications\u00a0are tools that allow users to create interactive queries (user-created searches), analyze spatial information, edit data in maps, and present the results of all these operations.\u00a0Geographic information science is the science underlying geographic concepts, applications, and systems. <\/p>\n

\n\t\t<\/strong>GIS data represents real objects (such as roads, land use, elevation, trees, waterways, etc.).
\nReal objects can be divided into two abstractions: discrete objects (e.g., a house) and continuous fields (such as rainfall amount, or elevations).
\nTraditionally, there are two broad methods used to store data in a GIS for both kinds of abstractions mapping references:\u00a0raster images\u00a0and\u00a0vector. <\/p>\n
