Closly related to the Pandora&#8217;s box myth and also aiding the understanding of The Pully, is the biblical account of the warning given to Adam and Eve by God in the garden of Eden, not to eat a particular kind of fruit out of the abundance of fruit in the garden. But they disobey and this led to their eviction from the garden. Also, the  poem focuses on the relationship between God and man. Herbert uses the metaphor of the pulley to talk about man&#8217;s dependence on God and the fact that without God man is nothing. &#8216;The Pulley&#8217;, the first part narrates the creation story, while the second part describe endowment of man with virtues like riches, honour, etc. In the third part, God finds a way to retain man&#8217;s interest in Him by giving him everything but rest.<\/p>\n<h3>THEMES<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p>The following themes could be found in the poem.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div>The superiority of God, the all-knowing God, over man.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>The frailty of the human mind.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>God desires that man should look up to Him\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>The reason for man&#8217;s restlessness.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Man must accept his limitations.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>God&#8217;s love for man is limitless.\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>POETIC DEVICES IN THE POEM<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p>The following figures of speech and sound devices are apparent in the poem.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div>Alliteration: This is found in line 6 &#8216;so strength&#8217; and line 7 &#8216;repining restlessness&#8217;\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Assonance: This is found in line 8 &#8216;When almost all was out\u2026\u2026..&#8217;\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Biblical Allusion: The poem is an example of biblical allusion as all its content allude to the creation of the world and man in Genesis 1-2.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Consonance: In line 2 &#8216;blessing standing by&#8217;.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Personification: Two things, goodness and weariness, are endowed with human attribute in lines 19-20. &#8216;If goodness lead him not, yet weariness\/May toss him to my breast&#8217;.\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>ASSIGNMENT<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div>&#8216;The Pulley&#8217; is an example of metaphysical poetry. Discuss\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Identify and discuss the major themes in the poem.\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>                                                WEEK TEN<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<h3>                          THE PROUD KING BY WILLIAM MORRIS.<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p>CONTENT: &#8221;The proud king&#8217; is a poem about the evil inherent in arrogance and pride, which is a thematic preoccupation that is present in many culture around the world. &#8216;The proud King&#8217; is a long narrative poem, of epic proportion. It has 119 stanzas in all. 117 of these stanzas contain seven lines each with the first line of each stanza indented. However, the last 2 stanzas have nineteen and eleven lines respectively. The rhyme scheme for the seven line stanzas is consistent. The &#8216;Proud King&#8217; is didactic in nature, as the aim and objective of the poet is to teach certain values and virtues which are essential for the well-being of each individual. It revolves round the relationship between man, represented by king Jovinian and element of the supernatural realm, symbolized by an angel.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>THEMES<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div>Pride and the vanity of material wealth\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Supremacy of God.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Death is inevitable.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Impermanence of wealth, status and position.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>The immortality of art.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>The corruptive nature of wealth and affluence.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Sinners must repent of their.\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Leaders are answerable to God for their action.\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>POETIC DEVICES IN THE POEM<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div>Alliteration: In several lines of the poem, words, having similar first consonant sound, occur very close to each other.\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8216;more mad than mad&#8217; (line 405)<br \/>\n&#8216;royal race&#8217; (line 474)<br \/>\n&#8216;visage vanished'(line 141)<br \/>\n&#8216;sins thou straight shall shrive'(line 652)\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Antithesis: The poet also uses contradictory expressions to convey ideas:\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8216;And is mighty lord to slay and save&#8217; (line 648)<br \/>\n&#8216;New things becoming old, and old things new&#8217; (line 784)\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Oxymoron: The use of two contradictory words to suggest an idea is found in the following expression: &#8216;Though bitter-sweet thou knowest well this is (line 747).\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Personification: The poet deploys the use of this devices to create mental images in the minds of the readers by giving human qualities to non-human things.
