Rivers are involved in erosion transportation and deposition of materials.<br \/>\n<strong>TERMS ASSOCIATED WITH RIVERS<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Source of a river: <\/strong>The source a river refers to where a river starts or begins, usually around highlands.<br \/>\n<strong>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Course of a river:<\/strong> This refers to the path or channel through which the river flows.<br \/>\n<strong>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Mouth of a river: <\/strong>This is where the river ends or where it enters into the sea, ocean or lake.<br \/>\n<strong>(4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0River basin or catchment area:<\/strong> It refers to all the areas drained by a river and its tributaries.<br \/>\n<strong>(5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Water shed or water divide:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It is<\/strong> the highland area which separatestwo or more rivers or two river basins<strong>.<\/strong> It is from the watershed that rivers take their sources.<br \/>\n<strong>(6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0River regime:<\/strong> This refers to the seasonal changes in the volume of water in a river in a year. It could be single regime where there is one period of high volume and one period of low volume and double regime where there are two distinct periods of high volume of water in a year. Knowledge of a river regime is important to man in controlling floods, storing up water for irrigation and human consumption and also for planning H.E.P production.<br \/>\n<strong>(7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Confluence of a river:<\/strong> This refers to the meeting point of two rivers.<br \/>\n<strong>(8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Tributaries:<\/strong> These are smaller rivers or streams that join together to form a larger river.<br \/>\n<strong>(9)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Distributaries:<\/strong> These are channels formed by the division of a river as it flows into the sea. They are usually found in the delta region of a river.<br \/>\n<strong>(10)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0River energy: It<\/strong> refers to the velocity of a river. The efficiency of a river to erode and transport the eroded materials depends very much on its velocity.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>FACTORS AFFECTING THE VELOCITY OF A RIVER<br \/>\n<\/strong>(a)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The volume of water released.             \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (b) Slope of the river valley.<br \/>\n(c)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Shape of the river valley.                    \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (d) Amount and size of materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>STAGES OF A RIVER<\/strong><br \/>\n\t\tThe entire length, valley or course of a river is divided into three main stages.<strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/strong><strong>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The upper course or mountain course (Youthful stage).<strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/strong><strong>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The middle course or valley course (Mature stage).<br \/>\n<strong>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The lower course or plain course (Old stage).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>UPPER COURSE OF A RIVER<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>CHARACTERISTICS OF UPPER COURSE OF A RIVER:<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>(a)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>It marks thebeginning or source of a River.<strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/strong><strong>(b)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>It is found around highland areas.<strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/strong><strong>(c)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>It has steep sides.<br \/>\n<strong>(d)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The river flows swiftly down the steep slope.<br \/>\n<strong>(e)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The dominant work of the river is vertical corrosion or erosion.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>PROCESSES OF RIVER EROSION<br \/>\n<\/strong>The load or materials carried by a river are the main agents of erosion, but the erosive work of a river consist of four processes. These are:<br \/>\n<strong>(a)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Hydraulic action: <\/strong>In this process, fast flowing water forces itself into cracks and joints within the valley under pressure and enlarges the cracks.<br \/>\n<strong>(b)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Corrosion: <\/strong>Corrosion is the wearing away of the sides and floor of the river with the aid of sand, pebbles, silts and boulders which are being transported. These materials eventually widen and deepen the river valley.<br \/>\n<strong>(c)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Attrition: <\/strong>This is the wearing down of the load as they collide with one another and with the floor and side of the valley. Large boulders are broken down into small pieces like pebbles.<strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/strong><strong>(d)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Solution:<\/strong> This refers to chemical action of water on materials it comes in contact with while flowing.
