{"id":227,"date":"2023-09-25T09:10:36","date_gmt":"2023-09-25T09:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/ecole9ja\/?p=227"},"modified":"2023-09-25T09:15:31","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T09:15:31","slug":"week-3-jss-1-first-term-social-studies-lesson-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecolebooks.com\/nigeria\/posts\/week-3-jss-1-first-term-social-studies-lesson-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 3 &#8211; Jss 1 First Term Social Studies Lesson Notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>WEEK THREE<br \/>\n<\/strong>TOPIC: PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: MEANING, TYPES AND FEATURES.<br \/>\nAn environment is a natural world in which people, animals and plant live.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Generally, it refers to everything within our surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Physical Environment therefore refers to all natural and non-natural things around us.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0It can also be regarded as our immediate environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0TYPES OF PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Natural environment: it includes; valleys forest, desert, hills, mountains, rivers, grass-land, etc.\n<\/li>\n<li>Non-natural environment or man-made: it includes; bridges, houses, hospitals, roads, vehicles, police station, market, schools etc.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Features of physical environment.<br \/>\nNigeria physical environment features includes;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Relief\n<\/li>\n<li>Rivers\n<\/li>\n<li>Lakes\n<\/li>\n<li>Seasons\n<\/li>\n<li>Weather\n<\/li>\n<li>Vegetation.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0RELIEF: This refers to land surface features above the sea level.<br \/>\nRelief can be classified into;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Highland\n<\/li>\n<li>Low land\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>HIGHLAND: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It can be described as a mountainous or hilly section of a country. Examples are; idanre hill, Adamawa mountains udinsukaplateau mountain.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0LOW LAND: Low land can be referred to as plains, the chad Basin plain etc.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0IMPORTANCE OF HIGHLANDS AND LOWLANDS<br \/>\nHighlands<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>They serve as easy defense during war\n<\/li>\n<li>They serve as tourist centers\n<\/li>\n<li>They are good source of minerals like gold, tin etc.\n<\/li>\n<li>Some help in construction of hydro-electric power in Nigeria\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Lowlands<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>They serve as means of transportation e.g. roads, railways port.\n<\/li>\n<li>They are good for agricultural purposes\n<\/li>\n<li>Suitable for human habitation\n<\/li>\n<li>They provide good place for rearing animals\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0RIVERS: The two major source of rivers in Nigeria are River Niger and Benue. Others are; River Ogun, Osun, ZamfaraAnambara, Cross Rivers, etc.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0IMPORTANCE OR USES OF RIVERS IN NIGERIA<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>They are used for domestic purpose such as drinking, washing, cooking etc\n<\/li>\n<li>They provide employment opportunities for fisher men, ship builders etc.\n<\/li>\n<li>They are used for generating electricity e.gKangi dam\n<\/li>\n<li>They are used by industries for production purpose. E.g. for production of soft drinks, bottle water etc.\n<\/li>\n<li>They provide food for man kind e.g. fishes, crayfish etc.\n<\/li>\n<li>They are used in construction of sea ports.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0LAKES: A lake can be defined as a large area of water surrounded by land<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0SEASONS: There are two seasons in Nigeria<br \/>\nThey are;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Wet season\n<\/li>\n<li>Dry season\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Wet Season: This is a period of rainfall and humidity. It falls between April and October and sometimes to November.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0It is normally caused by south \u2013west wind. This is a good period for farming activities in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Dry season: It is caused by North-East wind coming from Sahara desert. It comes with harmattan particularly in the Northern Nigeria. The dry season starts from November to April. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0WEATHER: This refers to the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The atmospheric condition changes from time to time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0CLIMATE: Climate refers to the average weather condition of a particular place over a period of time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>ELEMENTS OF WEATHER AND CLIMATE<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div>Temperature: This refers to the degree of coldness and hotness of a place at any particular time.\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Temperature is measured by &#8220;Thermometer&#8221;\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Rainfall: It is a situation where excess condensed water vapour in the atmosphere is released to the earth.\n<\/div>\n<p>It is measured by &#8220;rainguage&#8221;.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Wind: This is the movement of the air at a particular direction.\n<\/div>\n<p>It is measured by &#8220;Wind vane and Anemometer&#8221;\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Air Pressure: Pressure can be defined as the force exerted by atmosphere on the earth surface and other objects by air.\n<\/div>\n<p>It is measured through &#8220;Mercury barometer and aneroid barometer&#8221;.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Relative Humidity: This is the degree or amount of moisture (water presents in the air) in the atmosphere.\n<\/div>\n<p>It is measured with a &#8220;hygrometer&#8221;.\n<\/li>\n<li>Clouds: These are tiny droplets of water vapour in the atmosphere.\n<\/li>\n<li>Sunshine: This is the direct light of the sun. It is the brightness of the sun.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0VEGETATION: This refers to the ground cover provided by plants. It is influenced by its climate.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0There are three types of vegetation belt in Nigeria namely;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Forest\n<\/li>\n<li>Savanna\n<\/li>\n<li>Montane\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Forest: It contains trees such as Mangrove swamp forest and rainforest.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Savanna: It consists of tree covered with grasses and flowers located between trees. It can be further sub-divide into Guinea Savanna, Sudan savanna and Sahel Savanna.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Montane Vegetation: These are vegetations with tress and grasses.
