They are required in a very little quantity by the body. Vitamin can be classified into two main groups:<br \/>\n1. Water soluble vitamins.<br \/>\n2. Fat soluble vitamins<br \/>\n1. Water soluble vitamins: these are vitamins that dissolve in water. E.g. the B complex(B1) , B2, B6, B12, B15, folic acid, niacin, biotin pantothenic acid, and vitamin C (ascorbic acid).<br \/>\n2. Fat soluble vitamins: these are the vitamins that can dissolve in fat and oil. These include;<br \/>\nADEK: vitamin A, D, E and K<br \/>\nSome vitamins be synthesized from other substances in the body, such substance or compound that can be converted into the acting vitamins are called the <strong>pro-vitamins<\/strong>. Similarly, some substances interfere the proper utilization of and function of vitamins in the body. Such compounds substances are known as <strong>anti-vitamins.<br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/strong><strong>VitaminB1<br \/>\n<\/strong>Its chemical name is thiamine.<br \/>\nFunctions: &#8211; it promotes growth and increases appetite.<br \/>\n                   &#8211; It is involved in the release of energy.<br \/>\n                    -it prevents beriberi<br \/>\nFood sources: whole cereals, nut, legume, pork, offal, etc.<br \/>\n<strong>Vitamin B2<br \/>\n<\/strong>Its chemical name is riboflavin.<br \/>\nFunctions: -it is involved in the release of energy from carbohydrate food.<br \/>\n                    -it assists in the formulation of red blood cells and antibiotics.<br \/>\n                    &#8211; It promotes growth.<br \/>\nFood sources: whole cereals, offal, milk, legumes, cheese, egg, yeast, leafy vegetable.<br \/>\n<strong>Vitamin B3<br \/>\n<\/strong>Its chemical name is niacin \u2013 it is resistant to air, heat, and light.<br \/>\nFunctions: &#8211; it improves the appetite.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It assists in the correct function of the skin and nerves.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>It is involved in energy release from carbohydrate food.\n<\/div>\n<p>It promotes growth.<br \/>\n<strong>Vitamin B5<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>its chemical name is panthothenic acid.<br \/>\nFood sources are: legume, milk, whole cereal, yeast, offal, fish, egg, lean-meat and cheese.<br \/>\nIts chemical name is pantothenic acid.<br \/>\nFunctions: -it is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrate, protein and fat.<br \/>\nFood sources are meat, legume, nut, fish, egg, whole cereal, yeast.<br \/>\nVitamin B6<br \/>\n\t\tIts chemical name is pyridoxine.<br \/>\nFunctions: -it assists in the formation of antibodies and the synthesis of genetic material.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It acts as co-enzyme in protein and fat metabolism.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Food sources are whole cereal, leafy vegetable, legume, fish, nut, offal&#8217;s, meat, milk and egg.<br \/>\n<strong>Vitamin B12<br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/strong>Its chemical name is cyanocobalamine.<br \/>\nFunctions: &#8211; assists in the formation of red blood cells.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It assists in the prevention of anemia.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Food sources are fish, meat, liver, kidney, offal&#8217;s, milk.<br \/>\n<strong>Vitamin C<br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/strong>Its chemical name is ascorbic acid &#8211; it is a simple sugar, it is the most active naturally occurring and reducing agent in living tissues.<br \/>\nFunctions: &#8211; formation of collagen<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prevents scurvy.\n<\/li>\n<li>Prevents cold.\n<\/li>\n<li>Prevents infections.\n<\/li>\n<li>Promotes healing of wounds.\n<\/li>\n<li>Assists in the formation of adrenal gland.\n<\/li>\n<li>It is responsible for formation and maintenance of connecting tissues.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>food sources are fresh fruit (citrus fruit) egg mango, orange,  water melon, guava, black currant etc. green leafy vegetables egg okra, tomatoes, garbage, spinach.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Fat soluble vitamin<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><strong> VITAMIN A<br \/>\n<\/strong>Its chemical name is retinol<br \/>\nFunctions: &#8211; it aids bright vision <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Development of healthy skin.\n<\/li>\n<li>Essential for normal growth especially in children.\n<\/li>\n<li>for good development and maintenance of the lining of the internal membrane.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>VITAMIN D<br \/>\n<\/strong>Its chemical name is cholecalciferol<br \/>\nFunctions: &#8211; it enhances the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the body.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is responsible for good development of strong and healthy bones and teeth.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>food sources are:- milk and milk products, fish, egg, yam, palm oil, margarine, action of ultra violet rays from the sun on the skin.<br \/>\n<strong>VITAMIN E<br \/>\n<\/strong>Its chemical name is tocopherolis.<br \/>\nFunctions:-it acts as anti-oxidant especially in fats and oil<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it acts as anti-sterility factor\n<\/li>\n<li>It aids absorption of iron in the body.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Food sources are whole cereals, green leafy vegetables, eggs, liver, milk, margarine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0WEEK 7 Topic: Vitamins.
