It is also called <strong><em>feeding<\/em><\/strong> in living organisms.<br \/>\n<strong>FOOD<br \/>\n<\/strong>Food is any substance which when eaten is used to maintain life and growth.<br \/>\nImportance of Food<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To give energy\n<\/li>\n<li>To maintain life\n<\/li>\n<li>It makes us grow\n<\/li>\n<li>To make one stay healthy\n<\/li>\n<li>It helps to build the body and repair worn-out tissues\n<\/li>\n<li>It enables the body to fight against diseases.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>FOOD ITEMS OR FOOD STUFFS<br \/>\n<\/strong>These are items or things that we eat. Examples are rice, beans, yam, garri, fish, groundnut etc.<br \/>\nMeal<strong> &#8211; <\/strong>This is a combination of two or more food items eaten together.<strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/strong>Diet<strong> &#8211; <\/strong>This refers to the meals that we eat everyday<strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/strong><strong>SOURCES OF FOOD<br \/>\n<\/strong>Food items can be classified into two sources<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Plants\n<\/li>\n<li>Animals\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Plant sources<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Roots<\/em> e.g. cassava, carrot, etc.\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Underground<\/em> stems e.g. Irish potato, yam, onion etc.\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Fruits<\/em> e.g. palm oil, tomato, guinea corn, maize etc.\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Seeds<\/em> e.g. beans, groundnut oil, rice etc.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Animal Sources<br \/>\nThese include meat, cheese, chicken, egg etc.<br \/>\n<strong>CLASSES OF FOOD<br \/>\n<\/strong>Food can be grouped according to the nutrients they contain and the functions they perform:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div><strong>Carbohydrates:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><em>Sources<\/em>: Rice, Cassava, wheat, maize, millet, potato etc.<br \/>\n<em>Function<\/em>: It gives us energy.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><strong>Protein<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><em>Source<\/em>: Meat, Fish, beans, groundnut, milk, egg, melon etc.<br \/>\n<em>Functions<\/em>: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(i) Repairs of worn-out tissues<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(ii) It promote growth<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(iii) It gives us energy when carbohydrates is lacking in the body.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><strong>Fats and oils<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><em>Sources<\/em>: Palm oil, groundnut oil, margarine, butter<br \/>\n<em>Functions<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Act as insulator and prevent heat loss<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(ii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Provides much energy<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(iii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It forms part of cell membrane<br \/>\n(iv)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It cushions body organs.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><strong>Vitamins<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><em>Source<\/em>: Leafy vegetables, fruits (like oranges, pawpaw, etc.), egg, liver, palm oil.<br \/>\n<em>Functions<\/em>: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Promotes healthy body and growth in children.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(ii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Prevent diseases\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><strong>Mineral salts:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><em>Sources<\/em>: Fruit, eggs, milk, dried fish, vegetables<br \/>\n<em>Functions<\/em>: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Aids the formation of good bones, teeth, blood, meat and liver\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><strong>Water:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><em>Source<\/em>: Rain, spring, river, well<br \/>\n<em>Functions<\/em>: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0component of the blood and flesh<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(ii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Aids digestion\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><strong>Roughages:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><em>Source<\/em>: Vegetables<br \/>\n<em>Functions<\/em>:  (i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0makes food to pass through the digestive system easily.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>NUTRIENTS<br \/>\n<\/strong>A nutrient is a chemical or food that provides what living things need to live a healthy life and grow well.
