Examples are man, insect, bird, fish, toad, lizard, yam, grass, etc. Living things are classified into two major group i.e. <strong><em>plants and animals.<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n\t\tNon-living things are things that have no life in them.  Examples are stone, chair, table, water, shoe, bag, salt etc.<br \/>\nThe Characteristics of living things (Organisms) are the basic life processes that differentiate them from non-living (lifeless) things.  They can be represented by the acronym &#8211; &#8220;MR NIGER D&#8221;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>M _ Movement\n<\/li>\n<li>R _ Respiration\n<\/li>\n<li>N _ Nutrition\n<\/li>\n<li>I _ Irritability\n<\/li>\n<li>G _ Growth\n<\/li>\n<li>E _ Excretion\n<\/li>\n<li>R _ Reproduction\n<\/li>\n<li>D _ Death\n<\/li>\n<li>Movement: This is referred to as change of position or location. It is passive in plants but active in animals\n<\/li>\n<li>Respiration: This is the ability of living things to take in air.\n<\/li>\n<li>Nutrition: This is the process of feeding in living things. Plants can manufacture their own food during photosynthesis while animals depend directly and indirectly on plants for food.\n<\/li>\n<li>Irritability: This is the ability of living things to respond to stimuli or changes in their environment\n<\/li>\n<li>Growth: This is the irreversible increase in size and weight of an organism.  It occurs in both plants and animals.\n<\/li>\n<li>Excretion: This is the process of removal of waste products or toxic (harmful) materials from the body of living things.\n<\/li>\n<li>Reproduction: This is the ability of living things to produce young ones of their kind for continuity of life.\n<\/li>\n<li>Death: This is defined as the end of life or the absence of life.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANCE \/USEFULNESS OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS TO HUMAN BEINGS<br \/>\n<\/strong>The following are some of the usefulness of plants and animals to man:<br \/>\nUsefulness of Animals To Man<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Source of protein in food.\n<\/li>\n<li>The skin of animals can be used to make belt, bags etc.\n<\/li>\n<li>To carry heavy loads e.g. camels and donkeys (called beast of burden)\n<\/li>\n<li>Source of income to farmer.\n<\/li>\n<li>Means of transportation by man\n<\/li>\n<li>Security guards e.g. dogs\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Usefulness of Plants To Man<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Medicinal purpose\n<\/li>\n<li>Source of timber and plywood\n<\/li>\n<li> Source of fibres and latex\n<\/li>\n<li>For beautification e.g. ornamental crops (mainly flowers and shrubs)\n<\/li>\n<li>Source of food\n<\/li>\n<li>To maintain oxygen-carbon(IV) balance in nature\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>CLASSWORK<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What is a living thing?\n<\/li>\n<li>Mention the characteristics of living things\n<\/li>\n<li>Differentiate between living and nonliving things\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>ASSIGNMENT<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>SECTION A<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The ability of living things to take in food is called as____(a) irritability (b) movement (c) respiration (d) nutrition\n<\/li>\n<li>Which of this is odd?
