THE TRIUMPHANT ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM (MARK 11:1-11)

After healing blind Bartimaeus, Jesus and His disciples drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethpage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives. Jesus dispatched two his disciples to a nearby village. He told them they would find a colt tied to the door. He said no one has ever sat on it and that they should untie it and bring it to him. He further told them that if they were challenged, they should say the Lord has need of it and would send it back immediately.

On arrival to where Jesus was they threw their clothes on the colt for Jesus to sit on. Some people spread their clothes on the wad while others cut leafy branches from the tree. All the people who followed him shouted hosanna, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna is the high highest. The word “Hosanna” is a Hebrew word which means.

“Save us now”. It later became a prayer to God for help and also a shout of triumph. All this happened on the Sunday before his death. Jesus had come as the long-foretold messiah. He entered Jerusalem in His majesty. He now showed His identity as the messiah.

    JESUS PREDICTS PETER’S DENIAL [MATT.26:31-35; L K. 22:31-34; JOHN13:36-38]

After supper was over, Jesus wanted to prepare them [the disciples] for what was going to happen that very night, but they were slow to understand what he said. Jesus said to them, “All of you will run away and leave me, for the scripture says, “I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.” After I am raised, I will go before you into Galilee.

Peter answered, “I will never leave you, even though all the rest do!”

Jesus said to Peter, “I tell you that before the cock crows twice

Tonight, you will say three times that you do not know me.”

Peter answered, even more strongly, “I will never say that to you or deny you, even if I have to die with you!” and all the other disciples said the same thing.

After the discussion, Jesus went to Gethsemane to pray. He went with Peter, James and John. It was after the prayer that he was arrested and the disciples escaped for their lives, but Peter followed at a distance. Jesus was taken to the High Priest, house, where all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the Law were gathering. Peter also followed them to the courtyard of the High Priest’s house; there he sat down with the guards, keeping himself warm by the fire. The chief priests and the whole council tried to find some evidence against Jesus in order to put him to death, but they could not find any.

He told them to wait while He prayed, after sometime, He came back and met them sleeping, He rebuked them and told them that they cannot even watch with him for one hour.

When he came the third time, He told them it was certain that he would soon be handed over to his detractors. While he was still speaking Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples came in the company of crowd from the chief priest, scribes and elders carrying swords and clubs. He addressed Jesus as master and kissed him. Jesus was arrested and taken away. He did not resist the arrest because he wanted the prophecy to be fulfilled.

    PETER DENIES JESUS [MATT. 26:75, L K. 22:56-62; JOHN 18:15, 25-27]

Peter was still down in the courtyard when one of the High Priest’s servant’s women came by. When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked straight at him and sad, “You, too, were with Jesus of Nazareth.” Peter denied it, “I don’t know I don’t understand what you are talking about”, he answered, and went out into the passage, just then a cock crowed. The servant woman saw him there and began to repeat to the bystanders, “He is one of them!” Peter denied it again. A little while later the by standers accused Peter again, “You can’t deny that you are one of them, because you, too, are from Galilee.” Then Peter said, “I swear that I am telling the truth! May God punish me if I am not! I do not know the man you are talking about!” Just then a cock crowed a second time, and Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the cock crows twice, you will say three times that you do not know me.” Peter broke down and repented of his sin, as he cried to God for forgiveness.

There were basically two separate trials of Jesus – The Jewish trial and the Roman trial. After Judas hadbetrayed Jesus Christ, he was arrested and taken to Caiaphas, the high priest where the members of Sanhedrin– The highest Jewish council- gathered. There Jesus was tried and found guilty of blasphemy for claiming to bethe son of God. The punishment for this offence by Jewish law is the death penalty, but being a colony of theRoman Empire, they did not have power to pass the death sentence. They had to take Jesus to Pontius Pilate, theRoman representative he was tried the second time and found guilty, although he was innocent.

    1. That Jesus was a seditious agitator perverting the nation.

    2. That Jesus was inciting people not to pay tax.

    3. That he claims to be a king, thereby overthrowing Caesar.

Pilate knowing that Jesus was accused out of envy, tries to set him free, Pilate’s wife told him not to haveanything to do with the death of Christ having told him the dream she had Pilate washed his hands and have

Barabbas released to them. Having flogged Jesus, they led him off to be crucified.

CHRIST BEFORE HEROD – Luke 23:6-12

He had heard about Jesus and he was anxious to see some signs performed by him.

Herod questioned Jesus at length but Jesus did not reply him, not minding that the chief priest and thePharisees were accusing him vehemently. He asked them to feel parts of his body. “See my hands and my feet, for it is I myself handle me and see for a spirit has no bone or flesh. They were amazed and could not believe. They gave him a piece of boiled fish which he ate before them.

He reminded them of what the scripture said of him, His suffering, burial, resurrection and that repentance and forgiveness should be preached in His name beginning from Jerusalem.

After saying “Peace be with you and He said to Thomas” Put your finger here and see my hand… do not be faithless but believing. CONTENT

  • The Great Commission
  • The Ascension

THE GREAT COMMISSION [Matt. 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-20, Luke 24:44-48]

At the close of his earthly ministry Jesus gave the ‘Commission’ that is the famous”Great commission” to His apostles who had been with Him and worked with him. A sort of commission had been given earlier on in Matt 10, in which they were to go only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, healing and preaching the gospel of the Kingdom.

This can be termed a “mini” or lesser commission, for it did not cover all creed and races. Now Jesus gives out a commission that sounds a universal note to go and make disciples of all nations regardless of race or creed.

Jesus has been given that authority by His father in heaven and He transfers the authority to us with the promise that He is with us always even to the end of the ages. The Lord gives a charge to keep, a charge to evangelize the world. We should therefore not be neglectful of this divine assignment.

EVALUATION

What is the great commission?

THE ASCENSION[MARK 16:19, LUKE 24:50-51, ACTS 1:1-1]

Ascension is the departure of Jesus from the earth to heaven on the fortieth day after the resurrection. Jesus led His disciples out as far as Bethany where He lifted up his hands and blessed them. As he did that, he departed from them. The disciples later returned to Jerusalem joyfully and were always in the temple, blessing God. In the book of Acts 1:1-12, Jesus addressed his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the father (i.e the endowment of power from above- The Holy Ghost power). They asked him if he will at this time restore the kingdom to Israel. Jesus answer them by saying “It is not for you to know the times or the season, which the father hath put in his own power… “It was at the point he told them to wait in Jerusalem because they will receive power after the Holy Ghost had come upon them and as a result of the power, they will be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and other places.

After He had spoken these things, while they were looking at him, he was taken up and a cloud received him out of their sight. This is Acts accounts of Christ ascension into heaven.

    CONTENT

  • The Mission of the Church. Matt. 28:19-20
  • The Coming of Christianity to Nigeria.
  • Churches in Nigeria.

THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH MATT 28:19-20

The main mission of the Church is to spread the good news of salvation to all nations of the world. The early church started from Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the whole parts of the world. Jesus does not want any part of the world to be in ignorance of the salvation provided by God through Christ. The early church preached the gospel of Christ to the Jews and foreigners in the Roman Empire. Europeans who had received the gospel later took over as missionaries in propagating the gospel. By the help of the Holy Spirit, they were able to spread the gospel to many other continents like Africa, South and North America, Asia etc. The nineteenth and twentieth century respectively, witnessed its greatest expansion in all the continents of the world.

EVALUATION

Who are missionaries?

THE COMING OF CHRISTIANITY TO NIGERIA

The first attempt to bring Christianity to Nigeria was made by European Catholic missionaries in the fifteenth century. They came in the company of some Europeans who were mainly traders. The missionaries visited so many places in Nigeria to preach the gospel but the people prefer to listen to the traders instead of the missionaries. Also, the climatic condition was not favourable to the missionaries. Likewise, there was language barrier. The traders were able to make transactions with the people because it was based on “barter”, that is exchange of goods. Therefore, the missionaries were unable to establish any church. They visited places like Warri, Benin, Port Harcourt and other towns near the sea, but there was no single convert.

After the abolition of the slave trade, the slaves were released to go home. Those taken from Nigeria came back home. It must be noted that Bishop Samuel AjayiCrowther, a former slave, translated the English Bible into Yoruba language. Most of them have become traders. They visited places like Lagos, Badagry and Abeokuta. Some of the foreign/orthodox churches that later settled in Nigeria are as follows:

  1. The Anglican Church.
  2. The Methodist Church.
  3. The Baptist Church.
  4. The Presbyterian Church.
  5. Foursquare Church.
  6. The Catholic Church.
  7. Seven day Adventist.

    EVALUATION

Mention four of the orthodox churches.

    CHURCHES IN NIGERIA

All churches in Nigeria belonged to European and American churches initially. However, some people started their own. They were called Indigenous or Independent African Churches. Some of those churches were The Church of the Lord, Aladura, Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Celestial Church of Christ, Cherubim and Seraphim to mention just a few. They were able to convert so many people both in villages and towns, both the educated and the illiterates. They were also able to meet the needs of the people in terms of healing, deliverances and so on.

SOME REASONS FOR THE RISE OF THESE CHURCHES

  • The method of worship is simple for the people to understand.
  • They compose their songs themselves and they translated the foreign ones into their languages.
  • Africans believe that they can know their future and their misfortunes can be dealt with immediately.

Later, new churches emerge due to some factors. They were called Pentecostals. Their emphasis is based on the power of the Holy Spirit. Some of them are as follows:

  1. The Redeemed Christian Church of God.
  2. Living Faith Church.
  3. Deeper Christian Life Ministry.
  4. The Redeemed Evangelical Mission.
  5. Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministry.
  6. Believers’ Love world.
